Autumn Sunset at Fistral beach
I went down to Fistral beach to see what the surf was doing and to check the sunset. It was beautiful. It was great to see so many warming colours as the weather starts to chill.
Good surf at Crantock
Today I had my first surf whilst living on the North coast. I went to Crantock. The surf was 2-5 feet, but quite messy. I tried out my new thermal rash vest, and borrowed a friends winter wetsuit, so I was pretty warm.
The forecast for tomorrow is BIG.....
Stormy Cubert
I have now moved to Cubert, near Newquay, in Cornwall, England. Check its location on Google. Whilst Cubert doesn't have a beach, Holywell Bay and Crantack are very close by. Both these beaches offer good surfing. My house mate Adam also says he thinks Polly Joke beach, at Crantock is also good for suring, but is very small, and access is via a cliff path. Anyway, the weather is very stormy, and although our new house is quite exposed it feels snug inside. Lets just hope I can stand winter surfing here. I am planning a two year trip starting next year, and hope to try surfing in many warm and beautiful places.
Last surf at Gwithian for the year?
The surf was small at Gwithian last night, but it was really nice to get in the water. It was much warmer that I was expecting. I have bought some websuit boots, which make walking on the rough paths much easier, and seem to make me feel warmer in the water. As the air temprature has dropped, but the water hasn't yet, the water feels very warm. I managed to get a few small waves, but it was dark at 19:30! How quickly the summer seems to pass. The same people where out surfing, quite a few of them. I move to Cubert this weekend, from Truro. Whilst it won't take much longer to get to Gwithian from Cubert, Hollywell Bay and Crantock beaches are very close to Cubert. My housemate tells me Crantock has some great winter waves. I have surfed Crantock a few times this year, and it has always been very nice there. I surfed at Hollywell once, but the surf was tiny, it was really just a day at the beach.
Autumn Surf
Well, the surf was definately big yeaterday, 5 or 6 feet at times. I took my body board to Gwithian. There where quite a few surfers in the sea. A film crew where on the beach, filming a scene from a movie or TV series. They had a archway and 2 horses with brides on them. I can only think that all of the surfers would have got in their way. Maybe they can remove the surfers digitally in post production. The waves where big, and I got pounded a few times. I like it when the waves are so big that after they have broken there is nothing but white water everywhere. Then, slowly peoples heads start to appear, and some large bits of seaweed. The water wasn't as cold as I had expected. I am still using my cheap Sola wetsuit. It is proving fine. As winter is nearly on us I will try my house mate Jess's winter wetsuit to see if I can stand surfing in the winter. I still have a big urge to buy a camper van. My car is slowly dying, and I'd love a camper, to drive it down the western European coast to Portugal this Winter. I don't think I am being very pratical, but I took the opportunity to check out the campers in the car park at Gwithian last night.
Summer isn't over!... yet
I thought summer was over. A few days ago I went surfing at Gwithian and it felt like winter. But today the sun was out and it felt great. I know this weather won't be here for very long, but I only have to last until the New Year, and then my travels will start.
