Mini-mal (funboard) surfboards

Mini-mal or funboard surfboards are between shorter thruster surfboards and longer Malibu surfboards in length. Mini-mal’s offer the best of both shortboards and longboards. Mini-mals are between 7 feet 2 inches and 8 feet 6 inches long.

Mini-mal’s are easier to paddle than shortboards, they can handle bigger surf and turn better than longboards. The typical three fin combination and performance rails allow for good carving. More buoyant than shortboards, mini-mals are easier to paddle and catch waves with.

Learning to surf with a mini-mal surfboard

Mini-mal surfboards are more difficult to learn to surf on than longboards, but much easier than learning to surf on a shortboard. However many surfers learn with a mini-mal board and continue to regularly surf on it after becoming more competent.

Mini-mal surf boards fit into most cars, and so are easier to transport that longboards.

Mini-mals are often called funboards as they are easier and are much more forgiving in poor surf conditions.

The mini-mal is a shorter version of the longboard, or Malibu surfboard, from where the mini-mal gets its name. Mini-mals have characterises that make it handle like a shortboard.
